#MusicMonday = John Mayer (again)

I realize I’ve been posting a ridiculous amount of John Mayer stuff recently, but the guy has been doing all of these sweet secret shows around Los Angeles and I just can’t help myself.

Last night, him and the Trio plus a dude on the keys rocked the hell out of the Troubadour. They played a single acoustic song and everything else was rock and blues songs, many of which were covers.  It was seriously awesome.  Who knew that earplugs would have been handy at a John Mayer show…I mean wow, he really rocked it.

Setlist looked something like this (mind you, i dont actually know the titles or original writers of many songs):

Vultures
Wait Until Tomorrow (Hendrix)
Come When I Call
Crossroads (Cream)
Never Said Never Again (written and sung by keyboardist, Matt)
Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone (Bill Withers)
Turn The Lights Down Low (new bluesy song)
Perfectly Lonely (new song)
Gravity
Whatcha Gonna Do About It (new bluesy song)

Encore
Who Says (new acoustic song)
California Dreaming (The Mommas and The Poppas)
Who Did You Think I Was

Unfortunately security was super tight about recording and actually took my Flip and deleted the memory.  So here is one of his tunes from the Try! album and a couple originals of the songs he covered last night.  Enjoy your week!

500 Days of Summer Sounds

500+Days+Summer+2009+Sundance+Portrait+Session+NfxKBZ9MsQRl

I just got back from seeing the film 500 Days of Summer.  The movie was good, but I found myself feeling like I should really love it and not falling for it 1oo%.  Perhaps thats what they were going for since its kind of the theme of parts of the movie…now i’m just overthinking.

Anyhow, the soundtrack is unbelievably good.  Its in the same vein as the Garden State soundtrack and whatever other newer indie quirky love flicks there are that have indie quirky love songs accompanying the whole thing.  Though since this movie is kinda weird and depressing at times, they substitute The Shins of Garden State for the melodramatic Smiths.  There is also everything from Wolfmother to The Doves to The Temper Trap.  All really cool stuff.  I really highly suggest you go out and see the movie just for the music and if not, just go on amazon and buy the album, its great.

This is one of the first songs played in the film, a cool track by the great Regina Spektor call Us from her 2004 album.

black joe

Happy Music Monday everyone! We’re gonna start this week out with a bang because thats the best way to start a week, unless you are in the army, you don’t want to start your week with a bang when in the army, could mean you are dead.

I spent the weekend in Tahoe for a bachelor party and most certainly a lot of drinking and loud music was involved while at our riverside cabin.  Thanks to the wonder of the iphone, my buddy Kevin was able to download some new music that he just HAD to hear while stumbling around with a beer in each hand.  The band was that of Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears.

Black Joe Lewis hails from just outside of Austin, TX and was clearly raised on soul.  The record harps back to the glory days of James Brown and classic fast playing, loud singing house party music.  The kind of music  you could imagine listening to at the Animal House fraternity party before and after dancing to Shout while wearing a toga.

If you need a pick me up to get you through the week, just hit up Amazon and buy the album, its only $8 and its worth its weight in good times.

#MusicMonday

My absolute favorite of the twitter hashtags is #musicmonday.  It’s the day when I can link people to music, praise a new album or bash a new single for no reason other than the fact that it is monday.  And now that I have a blog, I can post songs right here!!!!  Holy smokes!! This is fantastic!! Woweeeee!!!!

So for my first #musicmonday post, I’m just putting up some pop songs i’ve been digging lately since there is no better way to start the work week than with some dancing.

Barney_Broccoli

K-Os – “I Wish I Knew Nathalie Portman”  Great song that incorporates “California” by Phantom Planet.

R. Kelly – “I’m A Flirt”  Cool version of this song that he does along with T-Pain and is backed with music from Broken Social Scene

Mr. Hudson feat Kanye West – “Anyone But Him”

Little Boots – “The Remedy”  Fun dance song, surprising she isn’t a super star yet.
