a ThankYou from John Mayer

bio-image003

Johnny M, who is clearly one of the few big shot musicians out there who realizes the power of the internets, has gifted his fans with a solo recording of Edge of Desire that he apparently made in the middle of the night in his apartment in NYC. With the ease of giving people unique recordings these days, its incredible that very very few musicians just do it. It’s always something ridiculous like “follow me on twitter and then i’m gonna tweet something about my website and then you just have to go to my website, sign up for my mailing list and then recommend my new hair style to 7 friends and you can get a password to access a third party webpage where my song will be hidden behind an easter egg that looks like your mom’s big toe!”

John Mayer simply pasted a link for this song on his blog. Easy as ready-bake cookies.

and to continue with the ease, here it is on my site so that you don’t have to jump to his (slightly more entertaining site)

first, a great youtube cover

before i put up a thanksgiving post, thought i’d put up this pretty great cover of John Mayer’s “Half of my Heart” from one of those youtube sensation girls. Just listen through the 4 minute mark, then she just starts talking nonsense about herself.

Writing you a letter.

wale

I think we often forget that one of the coolest things about hip hop music at its finest is that it can be about taking one song and mixing it up to make it completely different and unique. There are still some artists out there who do such things, and apparently Wale is one of those artists. He has taken a quick line out of Mayer’s “3×5″ and written a very topical song on top of the “writing you a letter” idea. He writes to Obama and he writes to Tupac and actually has some interesting things to say opposed to other rappers who just talk about money and bitches.

Heartbreak Warfare is slightly better than real war

John Mayer and his crew of geeks created a very technologically advanced video for his second single off of his upcoming album, but they didn’t really do anything cool with the advanced technology.  To actually play around with the video, go to John’s website (which i assume is www.johnmayer.com)

You have to print out a piece of paper with a logo on it and then show that piece of paper to your web cam (if you have one…otherwise you are shit out of luck) and then the video will start.  Then, a really crappy, early 90′s looking animated video of john on a boring living room set will appear in the middle of whatever the webcam is seeing and he’ll sing and play the guitar for you.  If you put the logo paper back up to the camera and move it around, so will the crappy animated set!  Wow?

Honestly, that is some pretty cool technology, but they should have actually done something cool with it.  Like if you drag it up and down real quick, John has a seizure or something.

Anyhow, check out this screen grab of someone elses computer below.  It’s easier than printing out your own logo paper.

Who Says I can’t blog all day?

john_mayer_who_says_single_cover

John Mayer’s got a new album coming out before the year is through and as usual, I’m excited. If you follow my blog, you’ll realize i’ve seen a few secret shows of his recently where he has been testing out the new material, so i pretty much feel like i’ve already heard the album, which is kinda cool because i’ll be able to sing along on the first listen.

Like a lot of people, i’m kind of surprised that Who Says is the first single, mainly because it seems kind of risque for top 40 radio. I doubt parents want their little kids singing about getting stoned. Also, I think its way better as an album cut or even just a song saved for concert performances only. I really enjoy it live, but I don’t think it possesses the same raw feelings on the album cut. I’ll have to hear it laid down next to the rest of the album tracks. Definitely can’t wait for more.

on a side note, is it wrong that i want to have sex with that guitar in the photo?! god that thing is beautiful.

#MusicMonday = John Mayer (again)

I realize I’ve been posting a ridiculous amount of John Mayer stuff recently, but the guy has been doing all of these sweet secret shows around Los Angeles and I just can’t help myself.

Last night, him and the Trio plus a dude on the keys rocked the hell out of the Troubadour. They played a single acoustic song and everything else was rock and blues songs, many of which were covers.  It was seriously awesome.  Who knew that earplugs would have been handy at a John Mayer show…I mean wow, he really rocked it.

Setlist looked something like this (mind you, i dont actually know the titles or original writers of many songs):

Vultures
Wait Until Tomorrow (Hendrix)
Come When I Call
Crossroads (Cream)
Never Said Never Again (written and sung by keyboardist, Matt)
Ain’t No Sunshine When She’s Gone (Bill Withers)
Turn The Lights Down Low (new bluesy song)
Perfectly Lonely (new song)
Gravity
Whatcha Gonna Do About It (new bluesy song)

Encore
Who Says (new acoustic song)
California Dreaming (The Mommas and The Poppas)
Who Did You Think I Was

Unfortunately security was super tight about recording and actually took my Flip and deleted the memory.  So here is one of his tunes from the Try! album and a couple originals of the songs he covered last night.  Enjoy your week!

Just got back from an incredible surprise John Mayer show at the Hotel Cafe.  Somehow I actually got there in time to get in line early enough to be one of the 150 people allowed in and it was fucking incredible.  We ended up situated about 4 feet from JM (the photos above were taken on a blackberry…no zoom involved) and got to hear all of the songs listed below.  I’m hoping someone from the show took some video so I can post it in the morning.  Until then, goodnight and I’m sorry if you are jealous.

Stitched Up
Slow Dancing In A Burning Room
Half of My Heart (new song)
Friends, Lovers or Nothing (new song)
Human Head (funny song, similar to Born Without Bones)
War Of My Life (new song)
Love me Without Words (i’m guessing on this new song title as it wasn’t announced)
I’m On Fire (Springstein cover) -> 3×5
Heartbreak Warfare (new song)
Belief
Who Says (new song)
Neon
Human Nature (michael jackson cover as performed on guitar at his memorial)
Waiting On The World To Change

Here is audio of JohnnyM playing Human Nature:
