Sugarland and Jennifer Nettles in particluar have continued to blow me away with their song crafting skills, performaces and incredible incredible voice…and it looks like they’ve done it again.
This is down and out going to be the #1 country song within days and I wouldn’t be too surprised if it is a crossover success as well. Well done Sugarland. Well done.
see America? see what happens when you start voting for CRAP as your so called “american idol”? England, yes, ENGLAND, the country that we fought hard to escape from because they were a bunch of shmucks, now owns the best American bluegrass band of the year. Seriously???? I mean COME ON! We are a young country. Most of our culture is either stolen from our immigrant family’s homeland or manufactured by Disney and now, one of the few things we own we are letting someone else beat us at? What’s next? Will China create the best bbq in the world?
Hands down to Mumford & Sons. You’ve stolen our culture and one upped us. Congrats.
Love & Theft is a pretty decent country/pop act. There is a guy named Steven in the band who I hear is the Steven of Taylor Swift’s “Hey Steven” song. I guess that means he banged her. Which makes sense, because she also can’t sing outside of the studio.
check out the difference between the studio version and the live version. wow.
Studio version. Wow, these guys have some great voices and awesome harmonies.
Live version. *warning, get some tissues. this might make your ears bleed and eyes leak*
American Idol is back and its on the top of my mind. After hearing the Jason Castro EP I got excited and googled around for some of the other Idol losers and found a single from Danny Gokey, who came in third place behind Adam Lambert and Kris Allen last season. Gokey was a very prototypical American Idol contestant and probably could have won if he had competed in one of the first few seasons, when America was looking for a more adult contemporary star. He had the best sob story of anyone as he is a sweet, young guy who’s wife passed away just a short time before the auditions from some sort of disease (i forget what) and I think we all felt for him. Plus, he looks good enough for HDTV and his voice is pretty damned awesome.
So, let me tell you, I was pretty damned surprised when I heard his first single and realized that he is being groomed as a country artist. Now, I love country music, but I just don’t see how this guy fits the bill. You are supposed to cross over from country into pop, not the other way around. He has zero twang to his voice and unfortunately, the song they gave him is mediocre at best. I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little excited to hear his full album since I do think Gokey can sing his face off and I do love country music, but I’m definitely skeptical.
LA is back to being a rainy place. it was actually kind of beautiful last night as it began to rain just a few moments after i got in my car on my way home from downtown, just after 10. It was just late enough in the day and just early enough in the rain that there wasn’t any traffic and I could just coast down the highway with my music on, enjoying the peaceful combination of a lonely drive and the sound of falling rain. Made me wish I lived out in the country where you can just sit on your porch, bundled up, sipping on a glass of whiskey, watching the rain fall down. So, for today’s rain installment, we’ve got some country songs involving rain. Hurray!
Stagecoach has announced their lineup for the 2010 festival to take place in late April and I couldn’t be more EXCITED! Even if you don’t like country music, you just need to be a fan of good times to enjoy Stagecoach. The majority of the festival is spent wearing a cowboy hat with your flip flops while downing Jack Daniels, Budweiser and peanutbutter sandwiches while singing along to songs you are hearing for the first time with a bunch of your best friends who you only just met the night before at the slip-n-slide.
I’m gonna introduce some of the artists to you all on a weekly basis, or something like that, since we have 6 months until the event still…
So today, one of the headliners of the festival… Toby Keith! He sings songs about himself and songs about getting drunk and songs about driving trucks and playing in the mud. He’s a big dude with a 8′oclock shadow and you can tell that if he didnt grow up to be a country music star, he’d probably be a bronco rider. Yee haw!
It’s been too long since a COUNTRY post and Luke Bryan’s new album came out today, so its the perfect time for a new one. Luke was the star of a previous posting because he likes to sing what I consider AWESOME country songs. Today I’m featuring the first track on his new album, “Doin’ My Thing” which is called Rain Is A Good Thing. Now, according to Luke, the reason that rain is a good thing is because rain makes corn and corn makes whiskey which in turn makes his baby frisky. GENIUS! The second song needs no explanation as it is simply titled Drinkin’ Beer and Wastin’ Bullets. Take a guess about that one…
Last night the CMA music festival was on tv and i enjoyed it. It was actually a really well done 3 hours of television. Not too many commercials, not much bullshit, pretty much just all music. And great timing since today is country tuesday.
Not going with anything super cheesy today, in fact, i’m going with one of the better songs ever written and sung by a country artist. One of the bands last night was Sugarland and their lead singer, Jennifer Nettles, has a truly phenomenal voice. She’s able to get so much power into it and she’s able to convey so much emotion. So today I’m including two songs of theirs. One is an upbeat sounding tune that is actually a sad song about a former lover killing himself. The second, Stay, is seriously an amazing amazing song. Nettles’ voice shows so much emotion as she sings about begging her cheating husband to come back to her until she realizes she needs to just get up and walk out the door because he sucks and she’s better than he deserves. Seriously, a great song. Enjoy.
This weeks wacky country song is Drinkin’ Bone by Tracy Byrd. I heard this song on the radio one day during college with a bunch of my friends as we were driving through Indiana on our way to see the USC vs Notre Dame football game and we instantly fell in love. Not only does it have fantasticly ridiculous lyrics, but its a good pump up for the long wedding weekend ahead of me.
so who wants to take Oct 15th off of work and drive to SF with me to see Manu Chao and then drive back for the Cal game on Satrday at noon.
